On Being Yourself, Everywhere

2013 traffic growth

Notice my traffic this week versus the first 13 days of the year.

My traffic is double this week over previous weeks. I’ve had more people tell me to “fuck off” this week than ever before. I’ve also had more people tell me “I love you” or “I love this” than ever before. (More unsubscribes than ever as well. I’m doing a better job getting rid of the wannabes and supplicants.)

The point is we want to read and feel the real you. Not the sanitized web-only version. If I read one of your essays and then meet you in person are you going to be somebody else? I’ve often found that to be the case. Not just a smaller version of the same, but completely different people. It’s lame and it’s sad.

In an ever more competitive marketplace of attention, those who connect will be those who are themselves, confidently, shit stains and all.

A good case study of this would be, perhaps, James Altucher, though I must admit his constant self deprecation got a bit grating for me. There is a balance somewhere between the blood and the hero.

I know what you mean. But I give him a lot of credit for writing what he feels, whether it’s self deprecating or not.

Merci

Okay, this is the first time I give up my read-only mode, just to tell you that I love your straightness and honesty. There are a few things I don’t agree with, but maybe my attitude will change over time. Or yours. But this is not important. What important is to be ourselves in this minute. And that’s what I like about you, that you are giving yourself.

Thank you Merci. Glad you enjoy it.

This is so very true. To be honest when I got your email about “5 ways to grow up…” I wanted to tell you to fuck off myself. But when I read some of your articles and found myself disagreeing on some parts, and agreeing on other parts I thought, I like this guy.

Btw I have to thank you for showing me the way to simplepickup. 4 days after finding it and it is already turning my life around.

You’re welcome. Would be interested to hear how the simplepickup stuff goes for you over the coming weeks/months. E-mail me when you’re ready.

I find it interesting when people say that they don’t love all of something that someone has to say. Where is it written that you should or would even want to? Isn’t the point to experience multiple sides of an issue and make a decision about where we stand or what we believe? How else do we grow, evolve, become more of who we are? I love that you challenge my way of thinking about things.

Hi, I just found your blog today and I am happy to see person with such similiar objections in few matters. I like honesty too and find that people who make their images far different from their inner selves, are actually filled with fear, flowing around them in very lame way. I’m very happy that I learn to see it in people, so that I can make more time with people really valuable to me.
