Friends & Income

There’s this idea that if you take the incomes of your 5 closest friends and average them out, that’s what you should be earning.

What this idea is insinuating is if you’re not earning a level of income you’re happy with to dump your friends and replace them with people who earn more. Climb the ladder, so to say.

This “get better friends” advice is usually given in the finance or “make money online” communities and it’s why following a lot of people who teach that stuff is dangerous. Basing your friends on status is a means to misery. There will always be someone of “higher” status and, therefore, you’ll always be chasing and replacing. Or you won’t have the means to become friends with these people and you’ll resent the people currently in your circle. Either way, you lose.

As insulting an idea as it is there is one facet of it I agree with.

I am fully on board with the idea of dumping friends that are actively holding you back. The proverbial crabs in a bucket. This has absolutely nothing to do with their income or social standing. You could have a supportive, inspiring, friend – someone who pushes you to be your best – who’s a pauper as much as one who’s a prince.

That is absolutely vile behaviour. Our relationships need to be ethical. If you develop friendships based on income you are the poorer one and to be honest, no friend.

I’ve never heard about this idea. Sounds and seems not only stupid but also extremely stupid.

I like the ‘crabs in a bucket’ analogy. I have seen this happen a lot p particularly when I am about to succeed at something, and receive comments from ‘friends’ that would hold me back if I were to follow their advice (which seems to be based on maintaining the status quo).

And you’re in Costa Rica!! It’s where I’ve been researching as a place to go when I finally pack up and leave ‘stability’ behind ( a few fears to work through, and I’ll be off for good).

Love your news – thank you :)
