In the illustrious words of Trick Daddy (one of my favorite rappers): “Fuck fame, we out to get paid.”
I don’t care much anymore for getting paid in the sense that Mr Daddy (ha!) is talking about, but I like the general sentiment. And, of course, gotta get paid to put food on my kids’ table. And, of course, by kids I mean I eat enough for a family of 4.
I like what Epictetus said about freedom and fame.
“If we wish to retain our freedom we must be careful while dealing with other people, to be indifferent to what they think of us. Furthermore, we should be consistent in our indifference; we should, in other words, be as dismissive of their approval as we are of their disapproval.”
I value freedom over everything else and I see how seeking fame can sometimes interfere with that freedom. I’m not sure where the line is. I’m also not sure I have any control over that line. Which is, I believe, the scariest thing about seeking and attaining fame.
Note: Famous among dozens counts as much as any other kind of fame.
